New Release: DRUE - Same City
BLAQ VOID Cult Leader Drue Olsen sits down to talk about his roots, inspiration, and triumph after a year that has taken a toll on the music industry and the world. His new single ‘Same City’ is out now on all platforms.
DRUE felt a strong pull towards music early on. He began his musical journey in the seventh grade playing the tenor saxophone in school band.
At 16 years old he was experimenting with garage band and exploring his own take on music production. Shortly after, Drue began rapping to tracks he produced with his friend and graphic designer Sam Barsketis.
Eight years later Drue attended Berkeley College of Music where he was able to dial in his skills and develop a formula for writing. Drue recounts that the culmination of this project has indeed been a lifetime in the making.
Inspired by Ice Cube, Tech-N9ne, Tyler the Creator, and The Cool Kids, Drue immersed himself in music that motivated his art.
Early on in his musical journey, he would memorize tracks word for word from his favorite artists to diversify his sound. Practicing different styles, the intention would carry into his music creating a multifaceted persona that wouldn’t become categorized.
In this latest track, Drue pulls a lot of influence from the old school Texas style that originates from his father’s roots and hometown Houston.
‘Same City,’ released with Blaq Void, is an homage to Salt Lake City and the triumphs that are to come in 2021.
Drue began writing this track two years ago and was waiting for the right time to release it. After the pain 2020 has caused for the world and his city, he wanted to set the tone for the new year.
This track is an ode to Blaq Void and all of his friends that have supported their journey in the local music scene and making it their own.
Referencing SLC in this track Drue wants to do the city justice, showing that anything is possible if you attack your goals and are “relentless in your passions”.
